Westbury on Severn CC finally kicked off their 2012 season with a resounding victory at the Parish Hall.
After 10 games had fallen foul to the weather, it was a welcome release for the club to get some game time and get out in the middle. After last season's relegation the Second XI settled comfortably against visiting Highnam Court on a slow pitch in damp conditions but produced an impressive first innings total of 282-4 off their allotted 45 overs, after the early loss of opener Aiden Barr the score moved quickly on owing much to a second innings partnership from Ian Dunn (100 ret) and Rich Poole who carefully moved onto 94 before finally giving a chance which was taken in the closing stages. Danny Anderson (27) and Joe McGregor (29*) chipped in with runs at the end and it was left to the bowlers to defend such a large total.
Highnam Court in their reply reached 48-0 off 18 overs after opening bowlers Tom Burrows (0-26)and debutant Jeremy Fern (0-22) finished their allotted 9 over spells, then frustration set in and wickets fell at regular intervals gifting spinners Pete Griffiths (1-27 off 6) and the impressive Joe McGregor (4-13 off 8) and the visitors slumped to just 121 for 6 from their 45 overs as the game petered out. A confident victory to start the season for the 2XI who travel to Churchdown this weekend.
With a few other games called off as they didnt have the benefit of such fantastic groundstaff, the 2XI top the table with 18 out of a possible 22 points.
